Your laptop will come setup with all the following tweaks installed. The below is advised if you reinstall your operating system or change to another distribution.
We recommend using a combination of TLP and PowerTop to optimise battery life.
Configuring via PPA
You can easily install and configure our recommended battery tweaks via our PPA by opening a terminal window from the Gnome Launcher and entering the below commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:starlabs/ppa
sudo apt update
sudo apt install starlabs-power
If you would like more control over this process, below are the individual steps to setup these tweaks.
Install tlp and powertop:
sudo apt install tlp power top -y
Configure powertop with the below command, this usually takes around 15 minutes to run and you will not be able to use your computer whilst it is running:
sudo powertop -c
Set powertop to start automatically every time you turn on your laptop:
sudo sed -i -e '$i \sudo powertop -auto-tune\n' /etc/rc.local
After you have completed the steps above, you can use powertop to see your energy consumption by entering the below command:
The most important information is in the top left, the consumption displayed in watts.
You can work out your battery life from here:
8 watts energy consumption
36 watt hour battery
36 ÷ 8 = 4.5 hours battery life
