Using recovery mode





How to boot into recovery mode, useful for determining and fixing boot issues.

1 Boot into GRUB

Turn on the laptop and tap the esc key repeatedly.
Stop pressing the esc key when the star logo disappears.
The below menu should appear:

2 Too many ESC's

If you see the below prompt, you have gone too far.

Once at the grub command line, type normal, hit Enter, and then tap Esc until the menu is displayed.

If not, restart your laptop and repeat the first step.

3 Select Recovery Mode

Use the arrow keys to select Advanced options for Ubuntu. You will then be presented with the below menu.
Use the arrow keys to select the second option in the list that ends with (recovery mode).

4 Boot into Recovery Mode

Press enter to start the laptop with the selected recovery mode.
You will shortly see the below menu.

5 Recovery Options

Below is a brief description of the available actions and what they can be used for.

resume
Exits recovery mode and starts the laptop normally.

clean
Removes all leftover install files for currently installed programs.

dpkg
Resumes any incomplete program installs. Typically used when an operating system upgrade is interrupted.

fsck
Checks all file systems for errors and if found, attempts to repair the errors. Typically used when the laptop has experienced a sudden loss of power.

grub
Scans the SSD for any available operating systems and adds them to the grub boot loader.

network
Enables networking to allow access to the internet. This does not connect you to your wireless network.

root
Enters a terminal based shell prompt. This can be used for a variety of things including:

  • Installing and removing software
  • Editing configuration files
  • Manually repairing grub

6 Connect to Network

To connect to a wireless network, use the below command replacing NETWORK with your network name and PASSWORD with your network password:

iwconfig wlan0 essid NETWORK key s:PASSWORD
